Global Health

University Strategic Initiative

Seeking to build a world where all people can lead healthy and productive lives, Georgetown is educating a new generation of global health experts and pursuing discoveries that further human well-being.

Decision makers from all sorts of disciplines need the knowledge and tools to address complex threats to health and health security—from disease, to climate change, migration, and more. Donor support for a new university-wide Global Health Institute (GHI) will ensure we can convene perspectives from science, health, medicine, policy, law, economics, ethics, and the humanities to better understand urgent health challenges, find actionable solutions, and amplify these advances far and wide.

Advancing scalable, sustainable global health solutions

Stakeholders spanning all of Georgetown’s campuses are working to understand and address the complex factors affecting health on a global scale. The newly launched GHI will empower them to take their collaboration to the next level; educate the next generation of global health leaders; and elevate research, strategies, interventions, and practices capable of advancing positive health outcomes. Investments in the GHI will enable the institute to pursue new research, bring promising talent to Georgetown, and make discoveries broadly accessible and action-oriented.

  • Strengthening institute leadership

The GHI’s top priority is to secure and support visionary leaders, who will steer the institute’s core activities and partner with experts across the university. Key positions include the institute’s director and managing director, and the communications team that will play a vital role in collecting and disseminating Georgetown’s expertise in global health in order to inform policy and practice.

  • Educating global health leaders

Experiential learning programs, mentored research and fieldwork, and student scholarships will all be critical as the GHI educates a new generation of diverse leaders across disciplines. To ensure students graduate with the skills needed to promote health and drive change, the GHI will expand opportunities for undergraduates, graduates, and Ph.D.s to enhance their academic studies. These include investments in:

    • The Global Health Student Fellows Program, the GHI’s premier semester- and year-long mentored research program
    • New experiential learning opportunities, such as fieldwork, internships, and mini-courses
    • A new Ph.D. concentration in Global Health for four doctoral students a year
  • Fueling research and collaboration

Several core programs will advance research and collaboration among the GHI’s global health experts and practitioners. Investment priorities include:

    • A GHI Catalytic Investment Fund, which will infuse promising early-stage research with the seed capital needed to achieve measurable milestones. This fund will fuel global health “R&D” at Georgetown, with a particular emphasis on multi-disciplinary faculty groups with the potential to secure additional external funding.
    • Visiting researchers and scholars—creative researchers, accomplished practitioners, and expert faculty, who will enrich our campus and engage our community with fresh perspectives from around the world.
    • Postdoctoral fellows, who will be critical to building our interdisciplinary research portfolio, engaging students and external partners, and shaping the future of global health education.
  • Driving global health dialogue

To increase the visibility and impact of global health work happening at Georgetown—and to shape the global health dialogue around the world—the GHI will develop a powerful communications and events platform. With donor investment, the institute will:

    • Publicize our expert researchers and practitioners through our communications channels
    • Ensure that Georgetown-driven knowledge, interventions, and solutions can be disseminated globally
    • Engage worldwide experts through our signature, high-profile speaker series
    • Raise awareness and involvement on Georgetown’s campus

A Testimonial

sara rotenberg

“A highlight of the global health major was the expertise of the professors. Many brought their extensive careers at international organizations or in research to life in the classroom through guest speakers and examples. Having this connection between classroom learning and global health practice not only helped me realize I wanted to do a Ph.D. but also helped me gain the skills and background necessary to pursue it.”

—Sara Rotenberg (NHS’20), a Rhodes Scholar; global health graduate; and participant in the Global Health Student Fellows Program, the GHI’s premier mentored-research program

What is a University Strategic Initiative?

In this campaign, we ask: What could Georgetown accomplish with more expansive university-wide collaboration? We have identified several university strategic initiatives—including Global Health—that are poised for extraordinary impact. They span all of our campaign commitments, tap into expertise across multiple schools, and—with the right philanthropic support—will mark a new era of interdisciplinary problem-solving at Georgetown.
