Current Use Report 2025

How current use giving shapes Georgetown

Current use gifts are an important complement to Georgetown’s endowment—and essential to the university’s growth and progress. These directly expendable funds support student scholarships and new programs tied to Georgetown’s mission of preparing principled leaders and creative problem-solvers. The university relies on contributions from donors of all levels to reduce financial hurdles, address inequality, and enrich the experience of our students.

This philanthropy has an immediate impact on the Georgetown experience, providing students and faculty with the resources to become who they are called to be.

As we near the end of Called to Be: The Campaign for Georgetown, our ambitious $3 billion campaign, we want to share 10 stories of current use philanthropy from the last decade. The stories we share here demonstrate the profound ways in which current use giving continues to empower the Georgetown community to work toward a better world for future generations. We are grateful to everyone who has answered the call to give generously to the immediate needs of our people and programs.

Current Use Giving during the Called to Be Campaign

Thanks to our community of alumni, family, and friends, Georgetown has reached its $3 billion goal of which $1.81 billion is in current use dollars. This is the highest amount of current use giving of any previous campaign.

The importance of current use giving

  • What are current use gifts?

Current use gifts are cash contributions to the university that—with the donor’s express intent and permission—are fully spendable upon receipt. They differ from endowment gifts, which are invested by the university and provide a foundation of support in perpetuity.

  • Why are current use gifts important, especially now?

Current use gifts have always—and especially now—been essential to funding the university’s new initiatives and research. They help us engage our students, challenge our faculty, and expand our impact in service to the common good. Because our unrestricted endowment remains smaller than nearly all of our peer institutions, current-use gifts are particularly important to launching and driving the innovative ideas that support our near- and long-term mission.

These investments also enable Georgetown to enroll the best students from all backgrounds, ensure they thrive, and support the formation of future leaders. The university continues to rely on cash gifts to help students maximize their Georgetown experience so that they, in turn, can make a lasting impact on our ever-changing world.
